Benjamin Joseph (Iker) Zygmond, age 91, of Sayreville passed away Saturday August 6th, 2016 at Reformed Church Home in Old Bridge, he would have been 92 on August 11th. Benjamin was born and raised in Sayreville. Benjamin was a Army Veteran who fought in World War II. He was a combat medic with the 42nd Rainbow division, 26th Yankee division, 15th General Hospital in England, 15th General Hospital in Leigie, Belgium. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge, liberated the Dachau concentration camp and swept through Munich. He would be awarded the Bronze Star for his actions. After the war he would become an electrician for NL Industries in Sayreville for 32 years before working for the Borough of Sayreville Sanitation Dept. He was also a member of the VFW post 4699 and the Holy Name Society of Saint Stanislaus Kostka Church.

He had various hobbies such as pitching in the baseball games, playing golf, creating wood carvings, he wrote poetry, played guitar and was an accomplished acrylic artist. He also loved animals and his bantam chickens, especially “Red” the roaster. He also liked crossword puzzles and lottery scratch offs.

He is predeceased by his parents Frank and Helen Zygmond and his siblings Adam, Joseph, Frank, Casey, Eddie, Chester, Sophie, Stella and Mary. Surviving is his loving wife of 45 years Frances, his sister Pearl Halifko and his brother-in-law Theodore J. Albanese of South Amboy. Also surviving are his many caring nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 9am Tuesday at Saint Stanislaus Kostka Church. With a burial following at Saint Stanislaus Cemetery.
